FREE Summer Fun Event: ABQ Aquarium and Botanical Gardens (Courtesy of 100.3 The PEAK) 6/21/2013

The PEAK is back at it again with their Free Summer Fun Roadshow events throughout the summer!

Each event is COMPLETELY FREE, however, you are required to get there within the time slot, and make it through the door before capacity is reached. Each event has different capacity requirements, so get there early and beat the rush!

It's definitely summer here in NM, and the earlier we can get out and do things, the better. It's still cool outside, and when you start your day this early, it leaves lots of time to get other things done the rest of the day!

The next event is going to be held at the ABQ Botanical Gardens and Aquarium June 21st, 2013 from 6am to 10am. It's free to get in if you get there between 6 and 10, but you HAVE to have a pre-printed pass, which you can find HERE

You can also open the link on a smart phone or a tablet and present it electronically. Each pass is good for up to 4 people at a time at any of the Free Summer Fun Roadshow events.

The 2013 FREE Renovation Challenge

Anyone who has ever tried to makeover their house, or even a small part of it, knows that there can be significant cost involved. Cost savvy shoppers will always keep an eye out for the best deals, scope out the sales and are masters at the coupon game. But what if you could renovate most of your house entirely FREE? What if you could makeover the ENTIRE thing without it costing you anything more than a little gas money? I'm here to find out if that's possible, and I truly believe that it is.

If you have never used the Freecycle group on Yahoo, you have no idea what you're missing. The premise behind this service is that people throughout your local area join the group, then offer up items for the taking that might otherwise just be taken to the landfill. It gives these items a second chance at being useful, even if their current keeper no longer has a use for them, and keeps them from piling up unnecessarily in the dump. It also gives others in the group a shot at picking up some pretty neat stuff completely FREE.

There is no selling allowed. No bartering, trading or negotiating. The deal is... if you ask for it, you pick it up. If you offer it, someone else comes to get it from you. It's really that simple, and over the last few years of using this service, I have been AMAZED at some of the things I have been able to get. When I heard a story on the news of a single mother whose apartment had been completely gutted by a fire, I was able to get beds, bedding, clothes, appliances, kitchen items, personal care items, and furniture to give her a new start in her new apartment with her six kids. All it cost me was a little time asking for the items, arranging for pick up, and then transporting them from the homes they came from into her new place. It's really pretty awesome, when you think of it.

This got me thinking. If I could give that woman a whole new start, why couldn't I give my little condo a whole new look? We have been talking about selling it for awhile now, but it needs a fresh face before we can put it on the market. New paint, new floors, new lighting fixtures... things like that. There are lots of people who will put left over construction materials up for grabs, and all you have to do is go get it.

Our whole place is only about 900 square feet. We have 2 bedrooms, one bath, a tiny kitchen and the living room. We live in a condo complex, and our building consists of 3 attached units, so we don't have much of a yard to worry about... just a small flower bed outside the front door and some rock area behind the building.

I'm going to be kicking off this little project by going to pick up a free quart of paint. ACE Hardware is having a free paint promotion today, and giving away one free quart per family that stops in. That quart would probably be enough to paint the part of my kitchen that won't be getting tiled as the back splash behind the stove and over the back counters.

I will be posting pictures as I go, to show the before and after effects of what we are able to get done. I am going to be using Freecycle, as well as any FREE product promotion I can get my hands on. There are so many ways to get leftover stuff or promotional stuff for no cost at all that it's kind of silly to pay for it until I have no other option. Here's to the most adventurous summer project I've ever taken on!!

HALF PRICE Pet Adoptions!!

If I had the ability to adopt every homeless pet in Albuquerque, I would be all over that. My husband, however, isn't so keen on the idea of sharing our tiny condo with more than the two pets we already have (which, BTW, he swears are animal terrorists... and he's half right).

That's where the great people of Albuquerque come in! The Albuquerque animal shelters are having their annual January White Sale, where you can get any adult pet for half off the adoption fee, if it has ANY white on it!

Adult pets are far less likely to be adopted than the cute and cuddly babies. Kittens and puppies are cute, sure. But I have a puppy, and it produces more puppy-waste than I ever imagined.... and house training is a pain in the butt. Getting an adult animal, you are more likely to get one that already has the whole house training thing already down. This deal also goes for cats, too!

This deal is only on through January 31st, so my apologies for not bringing this to the spotlight earlier. The good news is, you still have a few days to check out the shelter pets and give one their forever home!

Here's the deets:

Solar Sundays: FREE with Museum Admission!!

I don't know about you, but I LOVE free stuff. When I pay to get something, getting a bonus just boosts the happy feeling effect. Guess what I found out?! On certain Sundays from 12pm-3pm you can participate in the Solar Sundays event at the New Mexico Museum of History and Science for FREE when you pay to get in to the museum.

Think of it this way... if you are paying the already awesome price to go to this event, then you get to see the ENTIRE museum for free. When you look at it that way, that's a pretty wicked deal. On top of that, if you have an Entertainment Book, there are coupons in there to bring the price down even more!

Telescopes, sun, and bilingual hands-on activities for the whole family. They have all kind of solar-related activities and fun for all ages, so why wouldn't you go?! It's located in Old Town, so you can also take the family on a little tour of the neighborhood and grab some lunch at the same time while you are there. This is a great area to spend the afternoon, given all the opportunities for fun and learning in such a compact location.

Here'e the rest of the info:
